Meine erste Kamera war ein schwarzer Kasten, der besondere Momente konservieren und Sehnsüchte abbilden konnte. Mit 11 Jahren fotografierte ich meine Schwester. Mit ihr musste ich spazieren gehen. Das Foto zeigt sie weinend neben dem Roller, für den sie noch zu klein war.
An der FH Dortmund gewann ich Pan Walther mit einer Mappe ausgewählter Bilder für mich, wurde Praktikant bei Walther, besuchte tagsüber die FH und versuchte in den Abend- und Nachtstunden das Geld für meinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen.
Aus Köln kam das Angebot einer Musikzeitschrift, für diese zu fotografieren. Eigentlich wollte ich nach Hamburg. Jahre später engagierte mich eine Schallplattenfirma. Meine zweite Leidenschaft brachte mich dazu, in einem kleinen Restaurant zu kochen. Doch ohne Fotografie ging es nicht weiter. Ich sehe in Fotos, denke in Fotos und ging deshalb zurück zur Fotografie.
Als ich „1980“ von Pina Bausch am Wuppertaler Theater sah, war alles klar. Die dargestellte Intimität, die Nähe zur Wirklichkeit faszinierte mich. So hatte ich Bühnenkunst noch nie gesehen. Die Authentizität und wie Pina Bausch die Suche nach dem Glück unternimmt traf bis ins Mark. In den folgenden Jahren fotografierte ich sämtliche Produktionen, die der Spielplan hergab. Nach dem ich das dritte Stück in Wuppertal gesehen hatte, kaufte ich mir einen Anzug. Den ersten nach der Konfirmation.
My first camera was a black box. I captured and caught special moments; the bright instant of future memories. At the age of eleven I photographed my sister in a state of distress on one of our daily walks, she stands crying next to a kick board much too big for her.
I built up a portfolio and eventually took it to Pan Walther at the University of FH Dortmund, he liked what he saw and took me on as one of his apprentices. This filled my days, my evenings and nights were taken by earning the money to live- but always with a photographer’s eye on the world of images around me.
I was offered work at a music magazine in Cologne, and though I longed to stay in Hamburg I went where I could earn a living doing what I loved. Years later I met the music business again, this time working for a record label. For a while I was a chef, my second passion is cooking. But always, I was a photographer at heart.
When I saw “1980” by Pina Bausch at the Wuppertal Theatre, everything became clear. The intimacy of the performance, the closeness to reality, fascinated me. I had never seen a performance like it. Pina Bausch’s authenticity, particularly her articulation of the search for happiness, struck me deep inside. In the following years I took pictures of each and every performance in her repertoire, and after the third show in Wuppertal I even bought a suit; my first since Confirmation!
I have always known that my creative self is defined by photography; I think in pictures; I find the world through pictures. Photography is, I know, where I should be.
